Before visiting any day-ticket fishery, club lake, or canal in England and Wales, every angler aged 13 or over must hold a valid Environment Agency (EA) / Natural Resources Wales (NRW) freshwater rod licence (note: Scotland operates under separate statutory permit rules with no national coarse rod licence).

2-Rod vs 3-Rod Trout & Coarse Licences

  • Standard 2-Rod Licence: Covers fishing with up to two baited rods simultaneously for coarse fish, carp, eels, and non-migratory trout (available as 1-day, 8-day, or 12-month digital permits).
  • 3-Rod Licence: Required whenever you have three baited carp or coarse rods in the water at the same time—even on private commercial day-ticket fisheries. Many fishery bailiffs check your EA 3-rod licence before issuing a 3-rod fishery ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 2-rod Environment Agency licence allow me to use a spod or marker rod at the same time?
Yes, a spod or marker rod with no hook attached does not count toward your baited rod limit, provided you never have more baited hooks in the water than your licence covers.
Do under-16s need a fishing rod licence in England and Wales?
Children under 13 do not need a licence. Young anglers aged 13 to 16 still must register for a junior Environment Agency licence online, though the licence itself is free of charge.
